McElkennon confirmed for Cavan role

Martin McElkennon was last night ratified as the new Cavan football manager after impressing in a caretaker capacity during the summer.

The Tyrone native, who was initially the team's trainer, assumed caretaker control of the Breffni men for the duration of the 2005 championship after his predecessor Eamonn Coleman was sidelined due to illness.

McElkennon guided Cavan to the fourth round of the All-Ireland qualifiers before they fell to Mayo and the county board liked what they saw.

McElkennon, a Ballygawley schoolteaher, will be assisted in his new role by ex-Derry player and current Bellaghy supremo Damien Cassidy who also helped out during the summer campaign.
