Castlerea businessman John Murphy has been confirmed as the mystery man who has pledged to dig the Roscommon county board out of their current financial debt.

Roscommon GAA is haemorrhaging to the tune of €1.4m at present but millionaire Murphy, who has made his fortune in the construction industry, has stepped into the breach with an interest-free loan deal of €1m to rescue the board.

The GAA’s Central Council sanctioned the loan at its meeting last Saturday when Murphy’s name was first revealed to the public.

Meanwhile, midfielder John Tiernan scored two goals in a man-of-the-match performance yesterday as St Brigid's reclaimed the Roscommon SFC title yesterday.

Brigid's beat Padraig Pearses, who were appearing in their first senior county final for 37 years, by 2-9 to 0-11.
