Eight gunning for Mayo job

Eight men are in line to take over as manager of the Mayo senior footballers, after nominations for John Maughan's successor were revealed.

Monday night's county board meeting saw nominations for the post confirmed - although interviews will not take place until after the Mayo minor team lines out in their All-Ireland final meeting with Down on September 25.

That decision is due to nominee Kieran Gallagher's current role as the Mayo minor team's trainer.

Former Limerick boss Liam Kearns, a Kerryman, has put his name forward for the senior post. Five Mayo men have also had their interests declared - Gallagher, Crossmolina's former All-Ireland club winning manager Thomas Jordan, Knockmore's Eamon Clarke, former Mayo defender Denis Kearney and former Mayo hurler Martin Trench.

The remit for Mayo's 2006 management team may be changed from previous seasons, when the senior boss also took charge of the Under-21 squad. The county board are expected to debate the issue of appointing a separate manager for the Under-21 team over the next month.
