Maughan quits as Mayo manager

John Maughan has quit as manager of the Mayo footballers this afternoon in the wake of Sunday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final loss to Kerry.

Maughan, in his second spell in charge of the westerners, informed the county secretary Sean Feeney of his decision earlier today.

The Mayo county board issued a short statement to confirm that they have accepted Maughan's resignation with a full statement expected in due course.

Having helped Mayo to All-Ireland finals in 1996, his first season in charge, and 1997, Maughan stood down in 2000 before taking on a one-year term with Fermanagh.

He returned as Mayo manager in 2004 and steered the county to a 40th Connacht senior title before watching his side succumb to Kerry in last September's Sam Maguire decider.

Maughan penned a new three-year contract last October, renewing hopes of Mayo garnering a first All-Ireland SFC title since 1951, and had been expected to see the remaining two years of the deal out.
