Daly quits Roscommon post

Roscommon has become the sixth county in search of a football manager after Val Daly brought an end to his four-month reign.

Kildare, Westmeath, Limerick, Donegal and Wexford are the other counties currently managerless.

Daly, who took over earlier this year following the resignation of Tommy Carr, quit on Tuesday night as only 13 players turned up for a training session ahead of Saturday's Tommy Murphy Cup quarter-final against London.

The ex-Galway player and manager was originally put in charge of Roscommon on a temporary basis in April, and the county board was due to meet after the end of Ros' Murphy Cup involvement to confirm him on a more permanent basis.

Daly watched his charges test Mayo in the Connacht championship before a disappointing loss to Louth saw their All-Ireland run over by early July.

The dropping of Frankie Dolan and Conor Beirne from the county panel for disciplinary reasons did little to help their cause.

Off-the-field, the Roscommon county board is also in the mire. A €1.5m debt has emerged, while the county board chairman Stephen Banahan announced his resignation last month, citing "recent poor results on the field and recent controversies involving player discipline" as his reason for stepping down.
