Cork lead by five at break

An eleventh-minute goal from midfielder Nicholas Murphy has helped Billy Morgan’s Cork side to a 1-8 to 0-6 half-time lead over Sligo in today’s All-Ireland SFC fourth round qualifier in Portlaoise.

Murphy was put through on a Conor McCarthy set-up to goal past Sligo net minder Philip Greene for an early 1-3 to 0-3 advantage for the Rebels.

Earlier, O’Moore Park’s 7,931 spectators were forced to wait an extra ten minutes for the throw-in as Dom Corrigan’s Sligo side delayed their departure from the dressing room onto the pitch.

Psychologically that seemed to have little affect on either side as they swapped excellent points in the opening ten minutes from Cork’s John Hayes (0-2 (1f)), Noel O’Leary and Sligo duo Sean Davey (0-2) and Mark Breheny (0-1 (1f)).

Following their goal, Cork maintained a three-point gap until the final five minutes of the half, when scores from Murphy and O’Leary built up the Munster men's buffer to five points by the break.
