Wexford book Leinster final spot

Wexford 0-24 Laois 1-10

Wexford 0-24 Laois 1-10

Holders Wexford opened their 2005 Leinster SHC campaign with this win at Croke Park, as corner forward Rory Jacob proved the scoring star, hitting eight points against Laois.

The Model men's Declan Ruth backed him up with four lengthy efforts from his wing back position in a game which Wexford dominated at will.

Laois did have their own spells of success, particularly in the first half at a sparsely-populated headquarters.

Paudie Butler's men cut through for a surprise fourth minute goal when Damien Culleton gathered in a Tommy Fitzgerald centre to net past Wexford goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry.

Rory McCarthy then responded for Wexford before Laois strung two more scores from James Young and debutant Cahir Healy on for a 1-03 to 0-02 lead by the tenth minute.

Incredibly, Butler's charges, the conquerors of Dublin last time out, were to score just once more in the first half through james Young.

Ruth, Eoin Quigley (0-02), Adrian Fenlon and Jacob found their range as Wexford hit the front on 16 minutes.

Jacob (0-03) again, Ruth, with a neat brace, Redmond Barry, Dessie Mythen and McCarthy tagged on further points as the 2004 champions led 0-15 to 1-04 at the break.

Wexford quickly tempered any hope of a Laois comeback on the restart as following a sole Young effort, Rory Jacob (0-02f) and Mitch Jordan hit three straight points between them.

Despite having a Liam Tynan goal disallowed for an over-carry, Laois doggedly remained in the hunt with scores from Young (0-02) and Tommy Fitzgerald.

A vital second goal, which would have undoubtedly springboarded the Laois men right back into it never came and late scores from Wexford substitutes Paul Carley and Nigel Higgins wrapped up the win.
