Kilkenny legend DJ Carey yesterday spoke of his delight at winning a fourth National Hurling League medal following the 14-point victory over Clare in the final at Semple Stadium, Thurles.

The Gowran man defended his side's commitment to the competition, following criticism of the format in several quarters during this year's campaign.

He said: "There's a bit of a myth about, that Kilkenny don't take the league seriously. We take everything seriously.

"I value everything I win, particularly at this level. If and when I give up the game, with whatever amount of All-Irelands, of league medals, every one of them will be treasured, because they're not easy to win."
