'Mac attack' sinks Mayo in Croke Park

Armagh's Steven McDonnell and Oisin McConville booked an NFL Division One final date against Wexford as they overpowered Mayo in front of 20,052 Croke Park spectators this afternoon.

There will be a new name on the league trophy next Sunday after eleven-time champions Mayo - who started with eleven of last year's beaten All-Ireland final side - were undone by Armagh's 'Mac attack' in a lively second half.

McDonnell (0-06) and McConville (0-05) - who missed a penalty chance in first half injury-time - pushed Joe Kernan's side clear after they had led 0-08 to 0-06 at the break.

McDonnell, McConville and the excellent Ronan Clarke all pointed in the opening stages, while Mayo lived off the off-the-cuff brilliance of Conor Mortimer and Ciaran McDonald.

John Maughan's westerners had been briefly in front at 0-05 to 0-03 when Peadar Gardiner found the target on 18 minutes.

Alan Dillon was then unfortunate not to goal on 27 minutes when his rising shot shaved the Armagh crossbar.

But luck was on the Connacht champions' side nine minutes later as McConville's spotkick - awarded for a Keith Higgins foul on the advancing McDonnell - was smothered by goalkeeper David Clarke.

Mortimer tagged on a late free to end the half two points in arrears and immediate Mayo efforts in the second half from the same forward and Dillon soon levelled things up.

Despite this, Armagh pulled well away - they had maintained a two-point buffer from 0-12 to 0-10, to 0-15 to 0-13 until the final furlong.

The final 20 minutes saw Clarke, Paddy McKeever, McConville and McDonnell adding a handsome 0-10 to Mayo's paltry two points from Dillon and David Heaney - who struck the game's final score.
