Waterford 3-18 Down 0-19
An experimental Waterford side finished the Deise's NHL Division One Relegation section campaign with a comfortable 3-18 to 0-19 defeat of an already secure Down.
With relegation not an issue for either side, Justin McCarthy's men were always in command at the Fraher Field, despite Mourne marksman Martin Coutler racking up a nine-point tally.
Paul Braniff raised an early white flag to level the sides at 0-04 apiece in the ninth minute before Waterford embarked on a match-winning run of eight unanswered points.
McCarthy's wind-assisted side led 0-15 to 0-05 at the break - hitting fourteen of those from play - as 2002 All-Star Eoin Kelly pocketed six points.
Paul O'Brien was also on target and a first Deise goal from the right-half forward three minutes into the second half, from the rebound of an initial Kelly shot, pushed Waterford further clear.
Kelly notched a second from a stunning 40-yard free which arrowed in over the head of Down under-21 goalkeeper Richard Murray, who was deputising for ankle-victim Graham Clarke.
A third Waterford goal for Eoin McGrath from a rasping close range shot on 62 minutes saw the home side do enough ahead of the May 22 opening of their Munster title defence against Cork.
Apart from Coutler, the fit-again Braniff impressed for Down with four points from play.
