Offaly 0-16 Down 0-10

Offaly 0-16 Down 0-10

Athlone IT attacker Shane Dooley, son of former Offaly legend Joe, pocketed five points as the students' hurlers were comfortable 0-21 to 1-05 winners over Longford in the Kehoe Cup this afternoon.

The visitors were 0-14 to 1-01 up at the break, despite conceding a scrappy goal to John Minnock. His flicked shot from a Declan Donoghue free eluded the Athlone rearguard midway through the first half.

Athlone's Martin Nestor was sin-binned on the stroke of half-time, however IT pulled through to a meeting with Westmeath next Sunday, thanks to points from Danny Whyte (0-04) and Kevin Coen (0-03).

At Newbridge, first half goals from Derek McConn and Ken Robinson helped Mayo to a 3-09 to 0-16 win over hosts Kildare.

McConn ended up with 1-06 (4f), and Robinson - notching his second goal on 47 minutes - saw the westerners through. Tom Carew top-scored for the Lilywhites with ten points.

Carlow confidently saw off the challenge of Monaghan at Dr Cullen Park, on a 3-19 to 0-07 scoreline.

2-12 to 0-04 up at the break, thanks to Des Murphy and Damien Roberts goals, Carlow blazed through to a clash with Roscommon next weekend, with Brendan Lawler completing his 1-03 haul from play in the final half-hour.

Meanwhile, in today's Walsh Cup quarter final, Damien Murray helped Offaly win out 0-16 to 0-10 against Down, with six sure-footed points.

Crucial yellow cards for Down duo Simon Wilson and Gary Savage dented their challenge, while Offaly also lost Niall Claffey to the sin-bin with little over ten minutes remaining.
