Roscommon fall to NUI Galway
NUI Galway's footballers picked up their second inter-county scalp in seven days at Kiltoom today, as Michael Meehan and Brendan O Callarain inspired them to a 1-14 to 0-12 FBD Connacht Football League win over Roscommon.
The tricky corner forward duo were again in rampaging form against the under-strength Ros, who hit more than ten wides, as the students added to last week's defeat of Mayo.
Jonathan Dunning's opening two frees eased Tommy Carr's side into the match but Caltra attacker Meehan soon pegged them back. He stole in on a long ball for a ninth minute goal, and went on to hit 1-05 (5f) in all.
Points from Dunning and Seamus O'Neill kept Ros in the hunt at 0-04 to 1-08 down at the break - O Callarain had hit four frees by that stage.
Dunning's accuracy from frees saw NUIG's lead belittled back to 1-11 to 0-11 with ten minutes remaining, however Og Colleran, Meehan and Fiachra Breathnach scores saw Ros eventually downed.
Also in Section A, a Marty McNicholas goal helped Mayo grab their first competitive win of 2005 as they got the better of a dogged Sligo IT outfit 1-10 to 0-12 at Ballinode.
In Section B, GMIT pipped Sligo 0-16 to 0-11 in Turloughmore, thanks to seven points from left half-forward Aidan Kilcoyne.
The Galway-Mayo Institute picked up their second win of the campaign as Kilcoyne, who netted twice in the 2-06 to 1-05 win over Leitrim last Sunday, attacked with vigour.
Ger Heneghan opened GMIT's account in a first half which they edged 0-08 to 0-07.
Sean Davey, returning to the Yeats side, bagged two points late in the half to draw the visitors within one but GMIT, without Galway star Nicky Joyce, pulled clear again through Kilcoyne and Heneghan.
In yesterday's Knockairport.com Connacht hurling, Galway forward Niall Healy hit 1-10 as the county's Development squad enjoyed a 1-14 to 1-10 win over Sligo It in Ballinode.
Dan Carthy goaled for the students, who had Jerry Farragher in top-scoring form (0-08).
At Dangan, in Section A, NUIG's hurlers dismissed Sligo-Leitrim's challenge 2-25 to 1-07 with Kevin Hayes and Killian Neylon netting in the second half. Paul Seevers notched six frees for the visitors.
