Hugh Kenny's Wicklow failed to repeat their league win over Derry as Paddy Bradley starred in Aughrim this afternoon, hitting a goal and eight points in the Oak Leaf's 1-15 to 1-10 Bank of Ireland SFC qualifier first-round success.

The county's sixth win in nine qualifiers since 2001 was hardly in doubt with Derry forwards Johnny McBride (0-04) and James Donaghy (0-03) their only other scorers. Kenny's charges lived off scraps from much of this bruising encounter, but having gone 1-03 to no score down, they did well with a late first half goal themselves from a Trevor Doyle penalty.

McBride pointed the way in the first minute for Mickey Moran's men, followed by a Bradley free on 5 minutes, a sharp turn and goal by the same player two minutes later and a curling opener from half forward Donaghy.

Rathnew forward Doyle replied on 11 minutes, and added three more points (1f) to reduce the gap to 0-05 to 1-07 with three minutes of the opening period remaining. Club colleague Tommy Gill was Wicklow's only other scorer but was pivotal for their goal as he was dragged down by Colm McGuckian for a clear penalty. Doyle struck it cleanly and to 'keeper Barry Gillis' left and the home side were still in the hunt at half time, 1-05 to 1-10 down.

They could not however bridge that gap and Bradley, who hit 1-06 in the first half, continued to impress after the break. Three minutes in, McBride traded points with Gill (free) and Donaghy notched his third.

With Gill and Doyle missing placed balls, Derry lazed to their victory with Bradley hitting two more and although Gill claimed successive frees late on, it was too little too late.
