President awards set for Croke Park launch

The first ever President's Awards, to recognise outstanding commitment and long time service to the GAA, will be presented at a black-tie function in Croke Park on Friday, June 4.

The idea arose from the work of the Social Awards Work Group under the Chairmanship of Jim Forbes and will be sponsored by the Irish Examiner.

The committee was set up by GAA President Sean Kelly in 2003 and the awards have been initiated to acknowledge the achievements and commitment of individuals throughout the association by providing formal recognition of their work for and dedication to the GAA.

Work Group chairman Jim Forbes said: "Whether on the field of play or through the involvement of our members at club, county or provincial council level, the GAA has always been fortunate to possess outstanding individuals who have served the association with distinction.

"We believe that the President's Awards are a wonderful opportunity to reward the contributions of these people and I am confident that they will become an integral part of the GAA's social calendar."
