Limerick's Stephen McDonagh has retired from inter-county hurling after failing to break into the Shannonsiders' first team this term.

The 32-year old Bruree club-man won National League and Munster titles in the 1990s and appeared in the All-Ireland final defeats to Offaly and Wexford in 1994 and 1996.

New boss Pad Joe Whelahan has made it clear that McDonagh won't figure in his plans this year and he follows Ciaran Carey into county retirement.
