Cavan shock Armagh with massive win
CAVAN 3-12 ARMAGH 0-8
Cavan earned their first league points and dished out Armagh’s second heavy loss of the Division 1B, as a decidedly off colour Orchard side lost 3-12 to 0-8 at Kingspan Breffni Park.
Last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists welcomed back Kieran McGeeney at centre half forward, but a reoccurrence of his hamstring injury saw him substituted after just 15 minutes.
Eamonn Coleman’s men led 0-9 to 0-3 at the break, after opening up a 0-4 to no score lead inside the first 14 minutes.
Finbarr O’Reilly (0-3) pointed in the eighth and ninth minutes before Jason Reilly (free) and Mark McKeever also scored.
Cavan hit four early wides to Armagh’s two, and it was not until the final ten minutes that the visitors got on the scoreboard.
Paddy McKeever and Stephen McDonnell (free) brought them back to within two points before the Breffni men stretched out to a 0-9 to 0-3 half time lead through Larry and Jason Reilly (0-2).
Two early second half goals, first from Finbarr O’Reilly and then Jason Reilly as Cavan’s advantage went to 12 points.
Oisin McConville opened his side’s account on 40 minutes and hit a further four frees as he was to end as Armagh’s only scorer in the second period.
Despite hitting ten wides in total, Cavan saw out the win with a late Larry Reilly goal.
