Wexford win low-scoring game

Wexford 0-10 Meath 1-05

Forward and skipper Mattie Forde returned to the Wexford starting line-up after missing last weekend’s defeat to Armagh to point his side to a famous 0-10 to 1-05 win over a vanquished Meath side at Wexford Park in Division 1B.

In a low-scoring first half Wexford did hold a 0-03 to one point lead after the first quarter thanks to three placed balls from Forde with Ray Magee answering back for the Royals after eleven minutes.

A 45 from Joe Sheridan, a goal scorer against Galway last Sunday, and a Damien Byrne point levelled up the game at four points apiece with Scott Doran arrowing over a point on 29 minutes.

The second half saw two red cards with Meath losing half forward Shane McKeigue eleven minutes after the restart for an off-the-ball incident involving Gary O’Grady.

Two points from John Hudson settled Wexford nerves with the finish line in sight, but they struggled to score in the final quarter, pointing just once more from a Forde free.

They lost full back Niall Murphy for a second bookable offence after the hour mark and were made to sweat after a Joe Sheridan goal in the final minutes pulled Meath onto 1-04 to Wexford’s 0-09.

But Ray Magee’s third point on 69 minutes was their final say.
