Michael Doyle has quit his position as manager of the Tipperary senior hurling team citing the amount of personal criticism levelled at him and his family after an unsuccessful championship campaign.

Doyle took over from All-Ireland winning boss Nicky English less than a year ago and failed to reach the same heights with defeats to Clare and Kilkenny this year sparking a supporters backlash.

A Tipp statement confirmed the county board had "accepted with reluctance and regret" the resignation of Doyle.

It added: "The resignation was not sought by the County Committee, nor by the Tipperary senior hurling panel."
