Fermanagh booked their place in the All-Ireland quarter-finals after a Markievicz cliffhanger tonight.

The adventure goes on for Dom Corrigan's emerging side, and their adoring fans are convinced they can go further.

The Ulster side dominated a thrilling tie, and should have won by much more, surviving in the end by virtue of two missed injury-time frees by Maurice Sheridan.

This was a game littered by goal chances, but incredibly just one goal came, scored late in the game by Mayo's Trevor Mortimer to set up a gripping finish.

It was score for score throughout the opening quarter, with lively Mayo full forward Brian Maloney twice equalising after Tom Brewster, from a 45, and Stephen Maguire, had found the target.

Brewster floated over a peach from the left wing to boost Fermanagh's growing confidence, but again the Connacht side levelled it at 0-3 each with a Maurice Sheridan free in the 15th minute.

By this stage the Ulstermen had kicked six wides to Mayo's zero tally, but Brewster edged them back in front with another sweetly struck 45, and skipper Raymond Gallagher, unusually quiet until now, opened up a two point lead with a superb score.

But the trusty boot of Sheridan had them level again, his third converted free, five minutes before the break

Noel Connelly's block on Ryan Keenan's goal-bound shot denied Fermanagh the first genuine goal chance of the game, and the Erne side continued to dictate the pace, Maguire thumping over a long range effort for a 0-6 to 0-5 interval lead.

Having missed eight scoring chances to Mayo's one, they should have been further ahead, and suffered a blow early in the second half when the influential Tom Brewster was forced to retire injured.

Another goal chance was spurned when Gallagher blasted inches past a post, and the half was almost 11 minutes old before Ciaran O'Reilly restored the two points cushion from a 45 metre free.

Ciaran O'Reilly smashed another goal attempt against a post, but Fermanagh were totally on top and opened up a four points lead through substitutes James Sherry and Ronan McCabe.

But John Maughan's side was right back in it when Trevor Mortimer drilled home a goal six minutes from the end.

Fermanagh hung on, however, in a pulsating finish which saw Sheridan twice miss chances to send the tie to extra-time when he missed from dead balls.
