Derry conceded a goal in the third minute when Anthony O'Leary followed up a loose ball from a Kieran Stevenson save but Derry responded superbly as they took the game to Wexford.

Five superb points from star midfielder Gregory Biggs, four from Ollie Collins and three from John O'Dwyer helped Derry to a 13 points to 1-05 interval lead, the visitors scoring two late points.

Four minutes into the second half, Gary Biggs played a low ball to Danny McGrellis and he slotted a fine shot past the Wexford keeper Paul Carley to open up a six-point lead.

However, in the final quarter, Wexford took complete control. Anthony O'Leary scored his second goal as Wexford struck 1-6 without reply with Barry Lambert bringing his personal tally to 0-08, of which seven came from frees.
