Ger Cushe resigns

Wexford selector Ger Cushe has decided to stand down following the Slaneysiders' elimination from the All-Ireland senior hurling championship campaign.

Wexford were bitterly disappointed following their defeat to Clare in last Sunday’s qualifier and the Games Administration Committee decision to bring the game forward by one week, leaving just a one week break after their provincial final defeat to Kilkenny.

Cushe who has been part of the backroom team for the past two years has decided to call it a day.

A member of the All-Ireland winning ’96 team Cushe had a huge influence on the players so his decision to step down will be seen as a huge blow to the team.

Manager Tony Dempsey is now contemplating his future.

“I will not be making any rash decisions. I will take time out, consider the workload involved, and this coupled with my new job as a TD, will be all taken into account when arriving at my decision. I will be giving it a couple of weeks.”

However the third member of the backroom team Davy Morris has indicated that he is willing to continue for another year.

There is also growing speculation that Liam Dunne, Larry O’Gorman and Larry Murphy could have played their last game at inter-county level.

Dunne missed the Clare clash having been sent off against Kilkenny, while both Murphy and O’Gorman, were dropped for their qualifier clash, although both made appearances in the second half.

Wexford County Board are expected to discuss both the hurling and football managerial posts at their next monthly meeting.

Football manager Ger Halligan has already indicated his willingness to remain at the helm but has not been re-appointed by the County Board.
