GAC to consider Wexford appeal

The Games Administration Committee will meet tomorrow night to consider an appeal from Wexford against the fixing of their All-Ireland senior hurling qualifier game with Clare for next Sunday evening.

Following a meeting on Monday night Wexford decided to lodge an appeal against the bringing forward of the fixture from Saturday week, June 20.

After initially making the fixture for June 20, the Games Administration Committee took Clare’s objections on board changing the fixture back to next Sunday evening, much to Wexford’s annoyance who had a full round of football championship games scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday.

However it’s unlikely the appeal will succeed as the Games Administration Committee is adamant that the three qualifier games proceed this weekend, to clear the way for the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

More significantly the GAC accepted that if the game was to go ahead on Sunday week and ended in a draw neither of the two quarter-finals could be played on July 27.

The reason for that is Clare and Tipperary have already met in the Munster championship so in the event of both of them advancing they could not be drawn together.

Wexford’s County Chairman, Sheamus Howlin, and County Secretary, Michael Kinsella, will be making a passionate appeal to the GAC to have the game played as originally scheduled.
