GAA: Cavan through to semi-finals after beating Sligo

Cavan deservedly earned their place in the NFL semi-final following a slick two-points defeat of an error-strewn Sligo, 1-10 to 0-11, at a thronged Markievicz Park.

Cavan deservedly earned their place in the NFL semi-final following a slick two-points defeat of an error-strewn Sligo, at a thronged Markievicz Park.

In excess of 6,000 spectators anticipated what was a 'win-or-bust' clash for both counties, as a superior Cavan were inspired by full-forward Jason Reilly's second-half goal.

Reilly, who also hit an upright with a goalbound shot, was sent off in the last minute following his second yellow card.

Lethargic Sligo, who trailed by two points at the interval, were inadequate in most sectors and their defence was continually exposed by the clever running of Cavan's Larry Reilly and Mickey Graham.

Sligo's best forward was Gerry McGowan, scorer of six pointed frees.

With Cavan ahead by three points (1-9 to 0-9) with a minute of normal time left, the home side almost stole an equalising goal but substitute Mark Breheny's shot was brilliantly thwarted by Cavan's net-minder Aaron Donohue.
