GAA: 14-man Sligo narrowly defeat Down

A bizarre Division 1B fixture at Sligo's Markievicz Park saw 14-man Sligo win narrowly (0-11 to 0-10) against a determined Down side who finished with 13 players.

Down substitute Seán Ward was the first to be sent-off after 21 minutes; a second-half incident saw red cards for Greg McCartan (Down) and Gerry McGowan (Sligo) with Ronan Murtagh getting a second yellow in stoppage time..

Sligo, who led 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval, controlled the game in terms of possession but failed to exploit numerous goal chances.

The winners needed two excellent late points from Tommy Brennan after a resolute Down had drawn level (0-9 to 0-9) with 15 minutes remaining through substitute Ronan Sexton's point.
