GAA: Cavan win exciting derby at Fermanagh

Cavan 0-16, Fermanagh 0-14

There was drama and excitement all packed into the second half of this local derby at Breffni Park today, when at one stage Fermanagh looked home and dry but were met by a determined Cavan team who battled back in the second half from a six point deficit to get home by two points.

The levelling score came in the 34th minute from Jason Reilly.

The two scores which killed off Fermanagh’s hopes came in the closing minutes from Finbarr Reilly and Jason Reilly.

The second half will be remembered for plenty of drama in which referee Michael Curley of Galway came in for strong criticism.

Over the 70 minutes he issued nine yellow cards and sent off Paul Brewster of Fermanagh and Cavan’s Larry Reilly.

At one stage, he called the captains together, Cavan’s Tomas Prior and Stephen McGuire of Fermanagh to try and cool the situation.

The game flowed much more freely in the second half and with the scores level at 14 points each it was then that Cavan produced a battling finish and grabbed the points.
