Mayfield coach Seamus Lawton praises ‘very balanced’ display

“We might have been a small bit worried coming into the game after we won our two previous games fairly easily. We thought perhaps we might not be up to the pace of the game but that wasn’t the case and I thought the display overall was very good and very balanced.

“The goals that we got were vital, they came at the right time too but it was the work-rate all around the field that really stood to us. But that’s the way it has been all year, every battle they were up for it and this is another great reward for them. .

“Ballyduff Lower really put it up to us today but we had the ability to respond every time and what can you say, Mayfield being crowned Munster champions, unbelievable.”

Lawton commended the attitude and commitment of his entire squad. “It has been a long year, we started at the end of January so we are going nearly the 12 months but, lucky for us, the conditions have been very good and the last few weeks we have been able to train away.’’

He spoke glowingly too about everybody’s input, but he had special words for a few key players.

“A great team return, but Nicky Kelly had a great game, got some great scores for us; Dan Lucey again, very strong at the back; Shane O’Donovan too, he gave up his game to mark Jack Kennedy and that made a fierce difference.

“It’s a great achievement by these players and I know that they will want to get to Croke Park next.

“This is maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
