Maurice Fitzgerald may join Kerry backroom team

The St Mary’s, Caherciveen All-Ireland winner in 1997 and 2000 is favoured to replace Diarmuid Murphy, who has stepped down, as a selector in 2017, with Stephen Stack and Noel Kennelly also mentioned as possible candidates.
Fitzgerald (47) successfully managed his club St Mary’s to a Kerry Intermediate Championship title last year and followed that up with the All-Ireland club title last February in Croke Park against Mayo champions Hollymount-Carramore. A year ago he was still lining out for the club in the County League at 46.
He is also coaching Coláiste na Sceilge’s senior colleges team this season.
If Fitzgerald joins Fitzmaurice’s management team, he will be the third All-Ireland winning forward on the ticket, alongside Liam Hassett and Mikey Sheehy. Dingle-based Padraig Corcoran will remain as the team’s strength and conditioning coach.
Fitzgerald was one of 87 All-Ireland medal winners from the past 20 years honoured at a gala function last week in Killarney by Kerry GAA. A sequel to the memorable ‘Golden Years’ video was also launched by Kerry Group
Kerry GAA chair Patrick O’Sullivan said that both the DVD and book were fundraisers for the Centre of Excellence at Currans and for the strategic alliance with Tralee IT in the development of the Kerry GAA High Performance centre.
Both are on sale in the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney and online at www.kerrygaa.ie
