Giles O’Grady collided with Dr Crokes' Brian Looney six minutes into the game at Austin Stack Park and there followed a 40-minute stoppage as the Kerins O'Rahilly's defender was attended to by medical personnel present before being stretchered into an ambulance.

O'Grady was taken to University Hospital Kerry where emergency surgery was carried out. It is also believed that O'Grady will have to go under the knife again this week.

“It is awful for Giles and a terrible injury for any player to have to endure,” said Kerins O'Rahilly's club secretary Haulie Kerins.

“We really hope this doesn't put an end to his playing career. He had problems with his hips earlier this year but he worked extensively on them so to be able to line out for the club.

“We have been inundated with inquiries from other clubs around the county to see how Giles is progressing. Everyone is thinking of him.”
