Michael Ryan: ‘Sometimes history can be a burden so you have to put it in its place’

Michael Ryan revealed Tipperary had to put behind them their series of championship defeats to Kilkenny to finally overcome their rivals.

Hurt was a motivator for the Munster champions in ending their run of five championship games without a win over their neighbours but Ryan said harnessing the pain was not going to be enough to beat them.

“It is overdone, to be honest,” he said of the defeats in 2011, ’12, ’13 and ’14 when they forced them to a replay before losing. “They did hurt, Mother of God they did hurt but you move on and you can’t live your life looking over your shoulder.
