‘Déise must hit Cats hard’ says former Waterford manager Michael Ryan

Former Waterford manager Michael Ryan has urged Derek McGrath to throw the shackles off and hit Kilkenny hard from the start in Sunday’s All-Ireland senior hurling semi-final.

‘Déise must hit Cats hard’ says former Waterford manager Michael Ryan

Speculation is mounting in Waterford McGrath is preparing to go with a more offensive system against the Cats – starting with three inside forwards and playing the game with two close to the opposition goal at all times.

McGrath’s predecessor, Ryan, now in charge of Westmeath, would be in favour of taking the game to the All-Ireland champions.

“What I would like to see is Waterford really start this game at 100 miles per hour, go for everything and take the game to Kilkenny,” he said.

“If they let Kilkenny put their stamp on this game, they’re in trouble. I don’t mind playing a sweeper but we have to play with five forwards. Kilkenny haven’t played in five weeks but have dealt with this break over the years.

“The first 15 minutes are important — we have to put scores on the board and while we’ve been creating chances, we have to take them.”

Meanwhile, Tyrone have named an unchanged side for tomorrow’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final with Mayo in Croke Park (4pm).

Esewhere, captain Paul O’Donoghue returns to the Kerry side for tomorrow’s All-Ireland JFC final against Mayo, which opens the action in Croke Park at 2pm.

Having recovered from injury, he is named at centre-forward with John C O’Connor coming in at midfield while Patrick Clifford is at wing-back. Laurence Bastible, Michael O’Donnell and Kevin O’Sullivan drop to the bench.
