Podge Collins set for double action with Clare this weekend

Podge Collins is in line to feature for both Clare’s footballers and hurlers this weekend after the footballers’ qualifier against Laois in Cusack was moved from Saturday to Sunday.

Podge Collins set for double action with Clare this weekend

After Clare hurlers’ facile win over Laois in Ennis three days ago in which Collins scored 1-3, there had been a concern both games would take place on Saturday. That scenario looked increasingly likely with the news yesterday afternoon the Clare-Limerick Round 2 SHC qualifier will take place in Thurles this Saturday evening at 7pm.

However, the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) decided to defer the footballers’ already postponed Round 2A game with Laois by a day and it will throw-in at 2pm. It means the 24-year-old faces the prospect of playing twice in the space of 19 hours but his father said they will first assess him before a call is made on his fitness to feature in Cusack Park on Sunday.

“We’ll have to see how things go and what kind of a game he has with the hurlers,” said football manager Colm Collins about his son. “Our fear was the two of them would be on together on Saturday. Had that happened, it would have been a bit of a cod but thankfully common sense has prevailed.”

Collins had no gripes about the footballers’ game being pushed back a week because of the Laois-Armagh Round 1A re-fixture.

“These kinds of things happen and when they happen there’s no point in getting upset about them. You have to accept it and get on with it. It’s a week later and that’s it, really.”

He reports his panel to be in decent shape ahead of the weekend. “We’re pretty good. We have a couple of niggles that we’re hoping will settle. Dean Ryan is touch and go but other than that we’re good. We hope to have them all and we’ll make a call closer to the game.”
