Abbey score second victory

Mark Ferncombe fired over 10 points as Abbeyside earned their second win of the Waterford SHC against Cappoquin in Colligan last night (1-20 to 2-15).

Along with Ferncombe’s deadly accuracy, Mark Gorman’s goal on 44 minutes proved a pivotal moment for John Foley’s men as they eventually shook off resilient opposition.

In defence, Conor Prunty gave a powerful display of fielding from wing-back, while goalkeeper Stephen Enright produced two crucial saves. Shane O’Rourke scored 1-10 for a spirited Cappoquin.

Six points by Ferncombe helped Abbeyside into a 0-14 to 1-6 half time advantage.

Abbeyside led by five (0-8 to 0-3) after the first quarter. Shane O’Rourke replied for Cappoquin with three points in a row. The Villagers hit the next five, however, with Ferncombe, Mark Gorman, and David Collins all on target. Stephen Enright saved from Killian O’Sullivan on 20 minutes before Aaron O’Sullivan whipped the rebound wide. With a minute remaining, Evan McGrath was hauled down for a penalty and Keith Landers lashed to the corner.

Alan Kissane signalled a second Cappoquin penalty on the resumption of play. Enright stopped Landers’ low drive on this occasion. Cappoquin narrowed the arrears to one, before Gorman pounced on John Hurney’s delivery. Shane O’Rourke netted a consolation goal in injury time.

Fourmilewater also maintained their unbeaten start courtesy of a 0-24 to 0-11 victory over a depleted Tallow at Fraher Field. Waterford midfielder Jamie Barron led the way with 0-10.

Fourmile raced five clear before Rob Beecher registered Tallow’s opening point after 12 minutes.

Jamie Barron directed matters for Benji Whelan’s men with five first-half singles. Paul O’Brien posted four dead balls for Tallow. The one-way traffic continued during the second period. Seamus Lawlor, Liam Lawlor, and Brian Wall finished with three apiece. Tallow’s Thomas Daly was dismissed on 42 minutes.
