Brilliant Tomás Corrigan routs ‘shocking’ Laois

Fermanagh 1-17 Laois 0-10: Fermanagh boosted their prospects of staying in Division 2, with Tomás Corrigan scoring a brilliant match-winning haul of 1-11 to push Laois further into relegation danger.

Corrigan assumed the mantle of free-taker in the absence of suspended attacker Sean Quigley and was outstanding, nailing seven out of nine attempts and he also scored a 12th-minute goal.

The Erne county’s movement and energy bamboozled Laois and extended their proud unbeaten home record in Brewster Park to 11 games.

Laois’s go-to men looked lethargic and disinterested, manager Mick Lillis - who was sent to the stand in the second half - labelling it as “a shocking performance” which leaves them in the drop zone.

But Fermanagh manager Pete McGrath was happy with a dominant performance.

“We opened them up easily at times and there were gaps which you wouldn’t probably find against another Ulster team, but we are pleased and very heartened with the performance today,” he said.

All the damage was done early on, with Corrigan the star of the show. He hit 1-5 in a 16-minute spell and although Paul Kingston scored two points inside 60 seconds to bring Laois to within two points, Pete McGrath’s side’s were outwitting their opponents through superior movement and support play.

Corrigan scored a superb right-footed point from near the sideline and also chipped one over with his left foot after an unselfish pass by his brother Ruairi.

Donie Kingston’s second free of the half ended a 15-minute scoring drought for Laois, who trailed 1-7 to 0-4, but Fermanagh reeled off three in a row before the break.

Fermanagh opened up the second half with four points on the bounce, Corrigan, Aidan Breen, Barry Mulrone and Ryan Jones all on target before a Kingston free got Laois on the board.

The home side led 1-17 to 0-6 with eight minutes to go and took their foot off the gas, allowing Laois a mini reprieve as they kicked the last four points to at least get to double figures.
