Longford competed well but Kildare were sharper in front up front with goals in either half proving the difference. They grabbed their first goal in the 18th minute and sealed the win with a second six minutes from the end.
In the opening half and points from Diarmuid Masterson and Liam Connerton gave them a two point lead in the 17th minute. The Lilywhites replied with a goal from Eoghan O’Flaherty to go ahead for the first time.
There was two between them in the 31st minute but Kildare ended the half well to take a five point lead at the break; 1-7 to 0-5. Longford squandered early chances in the second-half before Brian Kavanagh scored their first free and he followed that up with another pointed free. Although they kept with Kildare Longford could only cut the gap to three points at numerous stages in the second-half.
Tommy Moolick got Kildare’s second goal in the 64th minute. Longford had a chance to grab a goal near the end but Mark Donnellan saved a Mark Hughes penalty.
