Killarney's St Brendan's and High School Clonmel to contest Corn Uí Mhuirí
St Brendan’s had it all their own way in Rathkeale, trouncing St Flannan’s on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-5.
The damage was done in the first-half as the Kerry college, playing with the aid of a strong breeze, carved out a 2-9 to 0-1 interval lead. David Shaw and Mikey Casey bagged a goal apiece on 15 and 32 minutes respectively, with midfielder Lee O’Donoghue kicking four points.
St Flannan’s didn’t a raise a flag of any description until a Darragh Duggan free on 26 minutes and matters improved little for the Ennis college after the break, the Sem winning the second-half by 0-5 to 0-4. O'Donoghue kicked three further points in a lifeless second period; Mikey Casey also swelling his personal tally with two second-half minors.
While Kevin O’Donovan got the opening point for Rochestown, Clonmel got to the pitch of the game far quicker, with midfielder Mark Kehoe lording matters in the early stages. Points from Michael Barlow, Shane O’Meara and Michael Hogan put them firmly in control and though O’Donovan – Roco’s best performer, did briefly cut the gap to two points, the Tipp school had a powerful finish to the half.
Michael O’Reilly made it 1-4 to 0-2 in the 19th minute as he produced a perfect side-footed volley from Eoin Hoctor’s handpass and full-back Stephen Ryan and centre-back Gavin Whelan were both on target with long-range efforts as they led by 1-8 to 0-3 at half-time.
O’Donovan’s third point did suggest that Rochestown would begin the second half with renewed vigour but, after Calvin Boland responded for Clonmel, it would be the 44th minute before the Cork school’s next point, from James Holland.
They continued to exert more pressure but Clonmel’s defending was solid and a Rochestown goal never really looked likely.
