Kerry selector Mikey Sheehy has questioned the logic of commencing the Allianz Football Leagues on the final weekend in January, describing the unnecessarily early start to the competitive season as “ludicrous”.

The Kingdom opened their Division 1 campaign away to Dublin last weekend, having trained collectively on just five occasions since the turn of the New Year. All 32 teams across the four divisions will enjoy a three week lay-off following this weekend’s second round of games and Sheehy doesn’t see the sense in forcing teams out in late January and then handing them nearly a month’s break.

Jim Gavin last weekend advocated a late March beginning to the league, a sentiment shared by the Kerry football selector.
