It was Brosna’s first final and nerves showed in the first half when the trailed 0-8 to 0-2. But with the wind to their backs in the second period, they made Listowel pay for ultra-defensive tactics when Don McAuliffe latched on to a breaking ball in the 48th minute and ghosted through for a goal.
Brosna were mopping up in the middle third, with Flor McAuliffe outstanding and, in the 50th minute, corner-back Shane Fitzmaurice levelled the contest with a point, 1-5 to 0-8. Then Mike Finnegan kicked Brosna in front in the 52nd minute, before Kennelly levelled with Emmets sole second-half score.
Tom McGoldrick had two long range frees to win the game for Brosna, but they fell short in really difficult conditions, so they go at it again on Sunday January 3.
Conor Cox had kicked four first-half frees for Listowel, while Ger McCarthy, Brian Sweeney, Brendan Flavin also kicked points in the second quarter, but Brosna showed why they are All-Ireland champions, with a rousing fightback.
Admitted Listowel player manager Noel Kennelly: “Scoring one point in thesecond-half is not acceptable and we would not be too happy about it. I suppose we were controlling the game for long periods until the goal went in. That put Brosna back into the game, conditions were desperate, so relief that we survived but disappointment we did not push on when we were six points up.”
Brosna manager Jimmy Keane added: “Our first-half performance was poor, we put ourselves in that position (six down at the interval) more so than Listowel. But I knew our boys would not lie down. Obviously going a point up, we thought we might hold on to it, but at half time we would have settled for the draw.”
