Fermoy far too powerful for Glanworth

Fermoy 1-8 Glanworth 0-6: Fermoy could afford the luxury of a missed first-half penalty and still finish comfortable winners over Glanworth in Saturday’s Cork IFC semi-final at Castlelyons.

Tempers boiled over between these near-neighbours late in the game, resulting in Ger O’Neill receiving his marching orders.

It didn’t help that William Blackburn was black carded a couple of minutes later, although it’s fair to say neither had a crucial bearing on the outcome, Fermoy’s victory already assured courtesy of a 50th minute goal from Tomas Clancy.

Fermoy led 0-5 to 0-1 at the interval, restricting Glanworth to a single pointed free. Padraig de Roiste blasted a 27th-minute penalty high and wide, but despite a much better third quarter from Glanworth, there was no way past a dogged Fermoy side.

Glanworth struck four points to two during that spell, but when Ruari O’Hagan was brought down, Clancy made no mistake with the penalty.

Fermoy manager Noel Crowley recognised his side had to overcome a physical battle against their rivals. “We’re delighted the lads stood up to the challenge.

"We probably left a couple of goals, maybe about 2-4 behind us in the first half, missed a penalty and thankfully we weren’t going to miss a second one.

“We reminded the lads at half-time there were four points between the teams. Our aim was a county final and that’s where we are.

"We were under pressure at times but we expected that from Glanworth, they’re up in this grade a long time, they have serious heart, they are a fabulous club and we knew they were going to put it up to us.”

Crowley admitted there is room for improvement. “Our shooting was a bit off, but we worked hard in terms of keeping possession, we’re a very fit team and it will take a very fit side to beat us.”
