Looking good: Shane Durkin named the sexiest GAA player in the country
Bookmakers Paddy Power asked 1,000 American women, with presumably no county loyalties to influence their preferences, to rate 645 of the 2015 championship’s hurling and football panelists purely based on their physical attractiveness.
The Dublin defender got the thumbs up, with Westmeath footballer Paddy Holloway and Cork’s Eoin Cadogan next in line in terms of desirability.
Durkin was yesterday taking validation of his handsomeness in good part and revealed his plans for the cash prize that came with the award.
“I initially thought it was the lads playing a prank on me. However when I was assured it wasn’t, I was quietly delighted and chuffed.
“I’m sure the Dublin lads will give me plenty of stick once they find out. However it’ll be nothing that I’ve not heard before. They already give me plenty about taking too long to get ready after games and training.

“There’ll be a few of them upset it wasn’t them who won. Especially the younger guys who have plenty of notions about themselves no more than Mr Danny Sutcliffe! So by winning this award it’ll put lots of them back in their boxes!
“The great thing about winning this award is that I’ve been able to donate the prize money to something close to my heart, the Cian Durkin Foundation. We set this foundation up as a family some years ago after I lost my nephew Cian to cancer.”
The engaged Ballyboden St Endas man trusts the accolade won’t cause too much bother at home: “My fiancee Sinead has been giving me plenty of stick since I told her. However I secretly know she’s delighted. She’s still trying to claim that she’s still the best looking in our house though!”
In a week when Galway featured in the most attractive hurling match of the season so far, their panel was also crowned the sexiest in the game, with Sligo topping the football list to confirm Connacht turns them out well these days.
Tyrone, in contrast, have been accused of turning in some ugly displays this summer and their footballers haven’t caught the eye of American women either, finishing bottom of the poll. But there was one sting in the tail for hurling snobs who believe they have the more beautiful game; overall footballers were rated more attractive than hurlers.
