New Cork minor boss Herlihy calls on 2010 All-Ireland stars
The Dohenys clubman’s appointment was announced last evening, with two of the stars of 2010, Noel O’Leary of Cill na Martra and Paudie Kissane of Clyda Rovers among his selectors. In addition, Alan Quirke (Valley Rovers) and Derek Kavanagh (Nemo Rangers) will also be part of the wider set-up.
Donal McCarthy of Valley Rovers, formerly an U21 selector alongside Herlihy under John Cleary, and Mick Comyns (St Finbarr’s), a selector for the past two years during Donal O’Sullivan’s tenure, are the other selectors.
Herlihy — manager of the Rebel Óg U17 development squad this year — noted the experience they possess.
“Everyone brings different strengths to the whole group. There’s a strong dynamic there. At underage, there’s a lot of unseen work, I know that from being involved myself, I’m very passionate about this. Derek was with the U16s this year and will be with the U17s next year. Ideally we’d see that as a shadow squad, as we’re limited to working with 24 players for January. Alan has been involved as a goalkeeping coach with the U17s. ”
Denis Ring was ratified for another term as minor hurling manager. The only change to his selection committee is that U17 manager Fergus Ryan of Mallow replaces Pat Hartnett, who was unable to commit. John O’Dwyer (Ballincollig) remains as coach. John Mortell (Ballyhea) and Glen Rovers’ Liam Martin continue as selectors.
Elsewhere, Seán Finn and Barry Nash are included in the Limerick side for tomorrow’s All-Ireland U21HC semi-final against Galway in Thurles (6pm) as Mark O’Callaghan and Robbie Hanley miss out. Michael Foley replaces Stephen O’Sullivan in the Kerry minor team to face Derry in Sunday’s All-Ireland MFC semi-final in Croke Park (1.30pm). Captain Mark O’Connor is fit to take a place on the bench.
