Munster Council receive turnstile windfall

As the council look set to fund much-needed floodlights in Fitzgerald Stadium after chairman Robert Frost admitted it would have been “very hard” to play extra-time there in Saturday’s Munster SFC final replay, an estimated 207,139 attended this year’s senior football and hurling championships.
Even without the benefit of the Kerry-Cork replay which attracted a 32,333 crowd, gate receipts would have been up on last year’s 164,264 attendance number. The hurling championship was down on last year — 117,112 in contrast to 127,765 — but unlike 2014 they were no replays this summer. Subtracting that Cork-Waterford quarter-final replay 13 months ago, this year would have recorded an increase of 11,440 in crowds.
