You are the referee: Maurice Deegan did not play his cards right

Saturday evening’s game being a replay and in awful weather conditions was a difficult game to referee and Maurice Deegan will be happy to get over it with no major controversy.

You are the referee: Maurice Deegan did not play his cards right

Colm O’Rourke and Dessie Dolan spoke at half-time on RTÉ about soft frees and Maurice having an oppressive influence on the game.

I would maintain he should have awarded more frees and given yellow cards, given the type of conditions and the game it was.

I also believe it was unfair on supporters to have to endure a 21 minute half-time interval considering the poor weather. The regulation break at half-time is 15 minutes.

As happens in these conditions, we had a large number of throw-up balls and two minutes of injury-time at the end wasn’t adequate as we had injury stoppages for Killian Young in the 51st minute, Paddy Kelly in the 55th minute, Jamie O’Sullivan in the 57th minute and Aidan O’Mahony in the 70th minute, plus all the usual substitutions and melees.

A minimum of four minutes should have been announced.

Alan O’Connor received a yellow card in the fourth minute but also committed fouls in the 13th, 25th and 37th minutes.

Bryan Sheehan pulled Paul Kerrigan’s jersey in the 19th minute and got a yellow card in the 37th minute, committed a foul in the 33rd minute and in the 57th minute he swung back at O’Sullivan off the ball. The Kerry management replaced him within a minute of that.

In my view the most influential player was David Moran but he should have received a black card in the 16th minute for a deliberate body collide with Kelly.

Michael Shields should’ve got a yellow card for feigning an injury in the 34th minute and in the 31st minute I don’t know how Shane Enright’s pass under his legs was deemed to be legal.

I also believe it was unfair on supporters to have to endure a 21 minute half-time interval considering the poor weather
