Victory was crucial for the hosts — without a win in this campaign prior to this game — in their bid to retain hopes of avoiding a relegation dogfight.
They left it late with Brosnan’s dramatic 40 metre free the difference to the delight of manager David Power. He said: “We created lots of chances but our finishing was not good. Still we conceded two goals in a two minute spell late in the first half after we had gone five points in front.
That left us battling for the remainder of the game but we’ll take the victory. It’s our first so it should give the players confidence.”
Limerick boss John Brudair admitted his side were guilty of letting the result slip away. “We did enough in the second half to have taken the points but let the game slip in the closing stages. We dominated throughout the majority of the second half but failed to avail of our chances, while we conceded easy frees towards the end. They punished us for this lack of discipline.”
Wexford led 1-4 to 0-2 after 19 minutes, the goal a 12th minute finish from Kevin O’Grady, but Limerick stormed back with goals in the 24th and 26th minutes from Darragh Treacy and Peter Nash to grab a 2-6 to 1-7 interval lead. With Gearoid Hegarty dominant in midfield and Killian Phair impressing in attack the visitors led 2-10 to 1-12 after 54 minutes. But they suffered a setback with Seanie Buckley dismissed on a second yellow card one minute later. Nine minutes from the end Wexford defender Michael Furlong was sent off on a straight red following an off the ball incident, but it was two late pointed frees from Brosnan that proved decisive.
