O’Dea’s joy as GMIT progress

GMIT were delighted to edge past DIT at a bitterly cold Tuam Stadium yesterday and now await the winners of next week’s UCD versus Athlone IT tie in round two of the competition.

The first-half black-carding of Conor Madden was a massive blow to the Dublin college and GMIT’s Galway contingent eventually edged them across the finish line as Michael Farragher and Ronan Steede kicked late scores.

“We are absolutely delighted. They are a great bunch of young lads,” said GMIT manager Sean O’Dea. “Whoever we play, it’s away from home the next day so it’s going to be tough. Athlone IT will give it socks against a very good UCD team, so we’ll see who comes out of that one.”

Despite playing into a very stiff breeze, DIT led by 1-4 to 0-6 at the break. Madden’s 17th-minute goal pulled them level after a slow start, but after he brought his personal tally to 1-2, he has black-carded for a third-man tackle. DIT manager John Fox though it was a poor call from Marty Duffy.

“The black card in the first half, I thought was extremely harsh. In fact, it should have gone the other way. Their man was already on a yellow card and should have been red-carded. The referee got that horribly wrong,” declared Fox.

Ciaran Reddin kicked three points to haul GMIT back after their bright start to the half, but Steede’s and Farragher’s late points finished off the job for GMIT.
