A powerful spine through the centre of their team was the difference for Coláiste Dun Iascaigh on Saturday as they got the goals that mattered to claim the Munster LGFA post-primary ‘A’ title.
However, a spirited display by Scoil Mhuire meant that a game that looked like it was heading for one-sided anti-climax shortly after half-time was still alive right to the end.
Excellent goals in the first half by the excellent Aishling Moloney, Caimhe Condon and Rachel Moloney were added to by the impressive Roisin Howard in the first minute of the second and shortly afterwards the Cahir side led by 12.
Scoil Mhuire replied quickly, with Aoife Murray finishing to the net from close range and although scores then proved hard to come by, a penalty converted by Áine Power in the 50th minute, after Kellyann Doyle was brought down, then an Aoife Doyle point, had the gap down to just four.
By now there were some nerves among the Dun Iascaigh players and their supporters but their goalkeeper and captain Lauren Fitzpatrick got them out of more than one predicament with fine saves, including one in the second-last minute when Kellyann Doyle looked certain to score and reduce the lead further.
The final whistle, when it came, was a relief to the Cahir college but their victory was well-deserved thanks to an all-round hard-working effort, led by some inspiration efforts from Fitzpatrick, Moloney and Howard.

*The ‘B’ final played earlier, also in Clonmel, saw St Augustine’s from Dungarvan produce a remarkable finish to snatch the cup. Down nine points at one stage to Loreto Clonmel in the last quarter, they managed a flurry of unanswered scores in the closing minutes to win by 3-13 to 4-9.
