Waterford withstood a second-half fightback from UL to post the first victory of Tom McGlinchey’s tenure at a calm Carriganore yesterday.
The Déise held an 11-point lead at one stage but two Gearóid Hegarty goals brought the students within three. But Waterford settled and late points from Patrick Hurney and Gavin Nugent secured the win to set up a quarter-final against Cork IT next week. McGlinchey was pleased and his side’s display saw nine different scorers and 1-15 from play.
