Omagh’s Clarke set for shock final return
Clarke was ruled out of Tyrone’s championship campaign after sustaining the injury during St Enda’s opening SFC clash against Coalisland at the end of May.
He subsequently missed the club’s first Tyrone title success since 1988 and was expected to be ruled out until the New Year. However the 22-year-old could now be sprung from the bench in Sunday’s Ulster final against Derry champions Slaughtneil in the Athletic Grounds after making a speedy recovery.
“Conor will be togged out,” confirmed a member of the Omagh backroom team last night.
“It’s an incredible recovery and it’s a credit to himself that he has managed to get himself in a position to play. I’ve never heard of anyone coming back from a cruciate injury so quickly.”
Meanwhile Meath treasurer Brendan Dempsey will report on a healthy surplus of €184,686 for the past year at the annual convention of the Meath county board at Navan O’Mahonys next Monday.
Dempsey and chairman Conor Tormey have overseen a drive which has seen a major upturn in the Royals’ financial fortunes since taking up their respective positions two years ago.
At the 2012 convention, the accounts showed a worrying deficit of €180,800 for the previous 12 months. There was a considerable improvement in 2013, with a surplus of €16,676, and the upward surge was maintained this year.
There has been a huge upsurge in gate receipts for local club matches, with €442,559 taken in this year compared to €246,972 in 2012. An increase of over €30,000 was accrued from league gate shares.
Elsewhere, Cavan boss Terry Hyland has confirmed that outgoing captain Alan Clarke won’t be involved with the Breffni County footballers next year.
Clarke has skippered the side for the past two seasons. He is getting married in January and has not been involved in pre-season training.
“Alan is not committing next year,” Hyland told the Irish News.
