Macroom’s De La Salle led 1-4 to 0-1 inside 13 minutes, set on their way by a Marco Healy goal after 24 seconds, but they wouldn’t score for the rest of the first-half. Once Clonakilty adjusted to playing with the wind at their backs, they took control to lead 1-7 to 1-4 at the break. Macroom came again with a burst at the start of the second-half to level by the 40th minute and with eight left Clon led by one before an unanswered 1-3 secured the points.
Midfielder Healy’s goal, from a nice Don Creedon pass, stung Clon and though they responded with a point from Mark White, overall their early shooting was poor. In contrast, Macroom wouldn’t have a wide until the 33rd minute and points from Alan Quinn (two), Creedon and Joe Ryan had them six clear.
Seán Ryan’s aerial prowess at midfield began to tell for Clon, however, and they reeled off three quick points before Ryan’s run and pass played in Thomas Scannell for a goal chance but he fired over.
Lowney brought the margin back to a point after that and then, in the 26th minute, corner-back Daniel O’Brien strode forward from defence and exchanged passes with Dylan Scannell before firing past Ciarán O’Donoghue.
An excellent Santry free from distance left three in it at the break, but Macroom had renewed vigour at the outset of the second half. Kevin Murphy had two points while sub Trevor Tobin could have goaled from Chris Foskett’s handpass but his fisted effort was just over.
That brought it back to two points, 1-9 to 1-7, and while Quinn and Healy tied matters, two quick Mannix points for Clon were followed by one from Lowney, set up by David Kiely.
Macroom looked to have set up a rousing finish as centre-back Finbarr MacSweeney and Ryan made it 1-12 to 1-11, but their race was run and Clon powered into overdrive.
Thomas Scannell and Mannix gave them daylight before Mannix’s wonderful goal put the issue beyond doubt. Sanry added his fourth late on. Clon now face Tralee CBS, who have won both of their games, while Macroom are up against Coláiste Choilm.
