Kingston heroics put Rochestown in the clear

St Francis College, Rochestown 2-14 Charleville CBS 0-13

Leading by 0-8 to 0-7 at half-time, Rochestown had pulled two clear courtesy of Ciarán Cormac’s sixth point before Kingston struck with an excellent individual goal, capping a fine run with a blazing finish.

While Charleville substitute David Jones responded with a free, Kingston added a second goal immediately afterwards, profiting from Kevin O’Donovan’s clever hand-pass to open up the seven-point lead which pertained at the end.

Though Rochestown had only three scorers, Kingston finished with 2-4 to his name while Cormack’s accuracy from frees was a big asset, contributing eight of his nine points from dead balls. Charleville were not outclassed, but didn’t have enough of a goal threat while Jones, who scored four points, was only introduced at half-time.

In the first half, Diarmuid O’Mahony, Kingston and Cormack helped Rochestown to an early 0-5 to 0-2 lead as the game struggled to spark to life, with Charleville’s Tim O’Mahony opting to send a 12th-minute penalty over the bar.

From the quarter-hour on, Charleville took control around the middle. Midfielder Jack Barry sent over two points while O’Mahony and Séan Griffin were also on target as they took the lead for the first time.

Rochestown seized the half-time lead, however, as Cormack nailed a long-range free from the right and then Kingston got his second, before their flurry at the start of the second period put them firmly in control.

With John O’Sullivan hurling a lot of ball at midfield, last year’s semi-finalists were never likely to be reeled in from such an advantage and Cormack and Kingston continued to keep the scoreboard humming.

Jones remained Charleville’s most dangerous scoring threat, with another sub, Kieran Cregan, also on target. Barry had a late goal chance only to fire over the bar and while Jones brought them back to within six points with as many minutes left, a comeback was never a live possibility.

Cormack had the final say in injury-time to round off a good day for him and his school.
