Referees chief Pat McEnaney later intimated it was a sending off offence although Maher remained on the field. In the same game, Lar Corbett suffered a facial injury during the first half when he followed Walsh as Tyrrell shadowed the Tipperary forward.
Walsh was harshly shown a red card, while Noel McGrath also saw the line for two yellow card offences.
Sunday’s referee, Barry Kelly, sent off JJ Delaney and Corbett following a row between the pair in Nowlan Park. Corbett, as a result of falling on his hurley during the scrap, fractured ribs. However, because of a technicality the pair didn’t get suspended.
After suffering a hamstring tear, Corbett was jeered off the pitch by Kilkenny supporters in Nowlan Park. He had earlier scored a goal.
Cody entered the Tipperary dugout in Thurles after a remark had reportedly been directed at him. He played the incident down afterwards.
